Guide

How to find the numbers faster

Look at the centre, not along the rows.

Fix your eyes on the centre cell and let side vision catch the numbers. Running your eyes along each row is the slow way.

Don't say the numbers to yourself

Reading every number in your head slows you down. Look for the shape of the next number instead.

Lost your place? Keep going

Don't go back to the start of the row. Look for the next number from where you are, the clock keeps running anyway.

Grow step by step

When 5 × 5 gets steady under the goal, move on: thirty numbers, the two-colour Gorbov table, then the shuffle.

What is a good time for 5 × 5?

There is no single norm for an online grid. Handbooks give rough times for a paper table with a stopwatch, which is a different setup. Compare yourself with your own best time.

What is the Gorbov table?

A two-colour version: blue numbers go up from 1, pink ones go down, and you alternate between them. It opens in chapter 3.

What is the attention check?

Five 5 × 5 tables in a row, as in the classic method. It shows how fast you get going and whether your pace holds. It is a snapshot of the day, not a diagnosis.
